Dennis McNally, SJ (born New York, died Merion Station, PA) was a prolific artist, longtime Jesuit priest, and devoted teacher. Dennis held a BA from Fordham University, Bronx, NY, an MA from New York University, an M. Div from Weston Jesuit School of Theology, Newton, MA, and a Ph. D from New York University. In over 50 years of studio practice Dennis produced an astonishingly large body of work encompassing a collection of over 500 paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. Dennis’ work was deeply inspired by his relationship with God. This inspiration is evident in his bold, highly saturated paintings dealing with themes including the role of Christ, Biblical concepts and stories, his own dreams, abstract forms, portraiture, and landscape. Dennis served at St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia for 40 years. He was a founding member of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at SJU where he served as chairman for 22 years, and established St. Joseph’s University Gallery where he curated over 200 exhibitions. He authored four publications, the most recent being Art for Church: Cloth of Gold, Cloak of Lead (University Press of America, 2011). Distinguished as a beloved teacher and mentor, Dennis was posthumously awarded the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.
